My conquests had been going really well until recently. No, no, no! — not my conquests. I am only defending my land. But as the saying goes: the best defense is a good offense. And if some money flows into my treasury in the process, you can’t really blame me, can you? You see everything I accomplish.
Some of my Roman colleagues didn’t understand that, which is why I had to justify myself in Rome around 52 BC. I always do that, even when it gets annoying.
The problem this time is: a few nights ago, a huge group of wild murderers, led by Vercingetorix, attacked some of our cities. Roman citizens were killed. At least they couldn’t isolate me from my troops.
Of course, I cannot tolerate this dishonorable slaughter and immediately set out to join my army. Despite heavy snowfall, we marched straight away to ensure justice. After we recaptured the city, the Gauls burned everything down to destroy our supply lines.
We survived but had to pay a high price: now even our former allies, the Haedui, have joined the rebellion.
From now on, I will act harshly against all my enemies; but with Rome in mind (I already have some plans here — more on that when the time comes 🤫), I will also show mercy to some peoples.
No matter what will come, I will always stick to one of my most famous sayings:
Omnium consensu.
With the agreement of all.
Gaius Julius Caesar
